A PLACE FOR EVERYONE

IN CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS

These are the Volunteer roles that we need on a weekly basis when we hold sessions.  Please note that all volunteers are welcome to join our practice circle on the day that they are volunteering while we are holding sessions!

  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to class and plan on staying 15 to 30 minutes after class. Our practice space is used as a classroom earlier in the day, so tables and chairs need to be moved out of the way. Our props are stored outside of the classroom, so they need to be transported into our practice space and set up in a circle for practice. Because we do not gain entrance to the classroom prior to 12:30pm, it is a bit chaotic to get all the setup complete prior to 12:45pm for class start. Typically several people pitch in, and we get it done! After class, the props need to be gathered and stored and the classroom restored to its prior state.

  • We need volunteers devoted to greeting our students with smiles as they enter the classroom. The time period before our classes start can feel chaotic as people are moving chairs and tables, and setting up the practice circle, so the greeter volunteer can approach students and guide them through a check-in process. We provide printed attendance grids with the names of all registered attendees to make it easy for them to find their name and check off their attendance. The greeter can remind both volunteers and students to fill out and wear name tags, which we provide.

  • We need a volunteer who can synopsize each week’s classroom experience and forward that information to our social media creator. This position could be a dual role if you want to serve in other classroom roles as well. We are very lucky to have someone handling our posts, but they request a few photos and the highlights of each class which can be sent electronically. If you can capture the type of message that will work well on social media, without having the bother of making the actual post, then this role will work well for you!

  • We provide refreshments for our students after class, as they have been attending ESOL classes all morning and are likely to be hungry. We ask our refreshment servers to set up a table for drinks and snacks prior to class starting and to serve our students after class. Refreshment time is very casual, and it is a good time to socialize and help the students practice English skills. We ask our refreshment providers that all food be healthy; water and 100% fruit juice are appreciated as drinks, and snacks can include baked goods, nuts, and fresh fruit and vegetables. The number of attendees can vary week to week, so we ask you to plan for 25 attendees. TYC will provide paper cups, plates and napkins to help with the serving of refreshments. Feel free to volunteer as a provider, a server, or both.

ADDITIONAL NEEDS OUTSIDE OF CLASSROOM

We also need volunteers to help with tasks outside of the classroom.  These roles are key to spreading our mission and involve engagement with our broader community.  If you have an interest in these roles, please complete our volunteer interest form below.

  • Our organization needs to raise funds to support the costs of offering free classes to refugee and immigrant women in our community. If you have interest in or are experienced at holding events to spread mission awareness and raise money, we would be grateful to hear your ideas and have your help. The TYC Fundraising Committee sponsored our first Winter Solstice yoga event last year, and we would like for it to be an annual practice. We are looking for fresh ideas and new blood to help raise funds, so please join us!

  • This role should be filled by someone who has experienced at least one 8-week Spring or Fall session with our organization and understands the special magic of our classes! We need “ambassadors” who can visit with ESOL classes, as well as organizations that have access to immigrant and refugee communities, in order to share information about our mission and the opportunity for free yoga classes. In some cases, holding a very brief “demo” of simple yoga movements can be a good way to attract new students. Presentations should be brief and use simple language. If you are willing to play this role, please let us know! You will work under the direction and guidance of our Founder and Board Chair, Mona Flynn.

  • If you have connections with groups that serve refugee and immigrant communities, we ask that you share information about our program in our hope to attract new students. We publish flyers, brochures and handouts that can be distributed prior to each session. Spreading our word into the community that we hope to serve is so important, please help us make new connections!
