About The Yoga Connection

The Yoga Connection is an ongoing community service project born from seva, a personal desire to serve. Seva is a Sanskrit word for acts of selfless service, and its roots combine to translate “together with.” The community experiences of this yoga program provides all participants - immigrant and refugee women, volunteers and teachers - the opportunity to strengthen body, mind, spirit and social connections. For these reasons, the project earned the 2020 national Seva award from the International Association of Yoga Therapy (IAYT).  Yoga therapists across the country are now interested in duplicating the program, creating a continuing education program for yoga therapists and growing the outreach for this special population.

The 2020 IAYT Seva Award included an additional recognition by Give Back Yoga Foundation, with a Mats Grant of 25 donated mats for program participants. This gift extends traditional yoga in how the lessons of group yoga practice support and  inform each yogi’s home practice, contributing to health and wellness self-advocacy.

In late 2021, TYC applied for federal non-profit status and began raising funds to support its local reach and broader influence. Empowering women, and (re)establishing protocol around diversity, inclusivity and equity, are the goals moving forward. There are a myriad of ways to participate in the program, some including teaching, attending class, providing childcare, supporting marketing efforts, and growing in the area of trauma-informed teaching practices.

If these or any other potential opportunities spark your desire to serve, come connect with us!
